At our Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, women can have their annual mammograms, biopsies, and can meet with a nurse navigator if needed. The Women's Center offers six newly remodeled labor and delivery suites and has a secure nursery for the care of our newborns. Position
Summary:
Performs mammographic procedures by applying proper ionizing radiation coupled with accurate positioning, compression, and processing techniques to obtain high-quality diagnostic images for interpretation by radiologist.

Responsibilities

Receive, relay and document verbal, written and electronic orders in patient medical record.

Verify informed consent when indicated. Assists licensed independent practitioner with interventional procedure, including time outs according to policy.

Provide for patient comfort and cooperation by familiarizing patient with the equipment and procedure, stressing the need for compression, and by providing general psychological support. Provide patient education. Assumes responsibility for patient needs during procedure, identifying and managing emergency situations.

Prepare patient for procedure. Position and handle patients to obtain the desired results as prescribed and specified for diagnosis using a high degree of care, tact, courtesy, patience and safety.

Solicit and record patient clinical history relevant to the performance and interpretation of the mammographic examination. Ensure information is documented and available for use by interpreting physician. Assist in maintaining medical records, respecting confidentiality and established policy.

Document location of lumps, scars, moles, etc. by means of radiopaque markers on breast and/or diagram on clinical information sheet.

Respond to patient questions on BSE, ACS guidelines for screening mammography, patient dosage, possible need for additional projections and other breast imaging procedures.

Select equipment appropriate to the patient and the examination to be performed (e.g., platforms, grids, compression plates, cassettes); sets, adjusts, manipulates and controls equipment to apply appropriate diagnostic dosages of ionizing radiation for radiographic exam.

Ensures equipment malfunctions are corrected, appropriate service calls are made, and preventative maintenance is performed according to the established schedule.

Measures, calculates and selects proper factors to obtain a quality radiograph. Safely uses a variety of radiation protecting and shielding materials and devices. Applies principles of ALARA to minimize exposure to patient, self and others.

Select and record exposure factors based upon breast tissue density, patient's age, numerical compression scale and equipment characteristics.

Position patient and equipment to provide projections specified by department protocol or physician orders.

Safely uses laser printer/film processing equipment

May assist with or participate in one or more of the following types of procedures:
needle localization; breast MRI; breast ultrasound:
imaging, biopsy, or fine needle aspiration; stereotactic procedure; breast implant imaging; ductography; specimen imaging; diagnostic work-up (for example, magnification, XCCL, LM, implant imaging)

Review and evaluate the images for completeness, appropriateness to the type of test ordered, proper identification, and to ensure that images are of appropriate diagnostic quality.

Participates in the performance, evaluation, and recording of the following QC tests as required by the American College of Radiology. Maintains compliance with minimum frequencies and performance of QC tests as defined by FDA Final Rules and Regulations.

Qualifications
Minimum Education:
None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.
Minimum
Experience:
Minimum of two (2) years diagnostic imaging experience required, including experience and training in mammography, breast anatomy and physiology, positioning and compression, quality assurance/quality control techniques, and imaging of patients with breast implants
Licensure Requirement:
Must have and maintain ARRT (R) licensure, and within six (6) months (M) licensure. State licensure in accordance with Tennessee guidelines. CPR required.
